It Was My Sin That Held Him There

In lieu of attending a church service on Good Friday, I elected to watch the service that Mars Hill Church (Seattle, WA) showed live online. They had a powerful presentation of the last days of Christ's life: from Judas' betrayal to Peter's denial to our Savior's death on the cross.

A couple of phrases from the hymn "How Deep The Father's Love For Us" have been playing in my head throughout the last 24 hours: "It was my sin that held Him there, until it was accomplished. His dying breath has brought me life; I know that it is finished."

We must each consider that our own personal sin put Jesus on the Christ. Sure, the Jews and Romans collaborated to physically place Him on the cross - but it was our sin that required His saving death. In 1st Corinthians 15:3-4, the Apostle Paul states: "I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures."

If my sin put Him there, your sin put Him there, and the Apostle Paul's sin put Him there - which of us is a better person? NONE OF US are the "better person." Romans 3 is very clear that "no one does good, not even one" of us. In fact the good that we try to do as believers is still tainted by sin - I so often do "good" for the wrong reasons: selfishness, to feel that I am better than others... I am disgusted that I think this way. We are all sinners in need of God's saving grace. Anything good I do should be done in order to bring glory to God, not in order to "help" me feel that I am doing more for Him than someone else is!

Pray for me that this continues to sink in and impact how I live!
